🎬 Understanding a film or series without subtitles: mission possible!

You’re watching an English-language series or a French film… and suddenly subtitles become a real refuge?
The good news is that it’s entirely possible to improve listening comprehension to the point of being able to follow a film without subtitles – even for an adult learner.

In this article, discover the best active listening techniques and online resources for rapid progress.

🎧 1. Active listening: the key to progress

Watching a series or film isn’t just entertainment – it’s a linguistic exercise in its own right.
The important thing is not to understand everything, but to practice recognizing sounds, rhythm and natural expressions.

👉 A few simple tips :

  • Choose short episodes or excerpts of 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Concentrate on listening to the intonations rather than the individual words.

  • Pause and repeat key phrases aloud.

  • Write down 3 to 5 new expressions at the end of each viewing.

💡 Bonus tip: subtitles in the original version (English for English, French for French) are an excellent springboard before deleting everything!

🌍 2. The best platforms for listening practice

🎥 Netflix and YouTube

  • Activate subtitles in the original language.

  • Try the “Language Reactor” extension: it displays two languages at the same time and lets you click on each word to find out its meaning.

📱 Podcasts and short videos

  • BBC Learning English or RFI Savoirs: perfect for listening to clear, progressive English or French.

  • TED Talks: excellent for working on intonation and thematic vocabulary.

🎧 Dedicated applications

  • Elsa Speak, Lingopie and Speechling combine videos, subtitles and listening exercises.

🧠 3. An effective method: the shadowing technique

This technique, used by polyglots, involves imitating the actor’s pronunciation and rhythm while you watch a scene.
The aim is not to translate, but to synchronize your ear and mouth with the language.

Try this:

  1. Watch a short scene with subtitles.

  2. Listen without speaking.

  3. Listen again and rehearse with the actors.

It’s fun and highly effective!

💬 4. Learn to spot key phrases

Films and TV series are full of ready-made phrases that are useful in everyday life:

  • “You know what I mean?”

  • “It’s okay!”

  • “Let’s get started!”

By spotting them, you’ll develop a natural ear for the language and become more spontaneous when speaking.

🏫 5. Combine personal practice and tutoring

Nothing beats the combination of self-directed learning and professional guidance.
In our English and French courses in Geneva, we focus on listening comprehension using real material: film extracts, podcasts, authentic dialogues…

You’ll learn to listen actively, identify accents and memorize useful expressions in a motivating environment.

🎯 Conclusion: a realistic and motivating goal

Watching a film without subtitles is not a mission impossible – it’s a natural step in your learning process.
With the right tools and a little regularity, you’ll quickly see progress.

🎬 And next time you watch a series, leave the subtitles… off 😉

I had an amazing couple of years studying two evenings per week. Both teachers I had (Virginie and Cathy) were fantastic, really managed to make it fun. Great organization by Nico as well, always offered flexibility when I was away on vacation etc. Could not recommend highly enough

As a current student at SwitzerLangues, I have nothing but positivity to express. I arrived in Geneva with little knowledge of the French language, Swiss/Genevoise culture, and with little direction about how to find the best language program in the city. I happened upon this treasure of a school by chance, and every day I'm thankful. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the director of the school is available and accommodating to each student's circumstances. The teachers are enthusiastic, and they are clearly very experienced and skilled at their craft. The class sizes are small, ensuring every student gets the appropriate attention he/she needs; and the pace of learning is appropriate for the amount of information taught. The students come from a wide variety of backgrounds (national, cultural, linguistic, professional, life stage, etc.) and are eager to learn. I appreciate that the school makes it a point to incorporate practical learning points into each lesson, as well as planning well thought out monthly field trips around Geneva to ensure students have the chance to appreciate local culture and integrate into the community. French speakers frequently compliment me on the progress I have made in the last couple of months - a testament to the efforts of my teachers at SwitzerLangues. I strongly recommend this school for anyone serious about learning French in a fun, but serious learning environment!

Best way to learn French!! I have learned more French in the 3 months here than I have ever in the 3 years I learned in Highschool!! The teacher Kathy for A1 is amazing, she engages you, explains so well, has humour, teaches culture and most interesting info about Switzerland and Geneva. You have an online platform to see all the class material online. You have a whatsapp group to connect with the teacher and students and to link you to an online zoom if your not able to be present in the class. Nicolas in charge of all the rest is also amazing, extremely friendly explains so well how many classes you can take, and gives you the flexibility to try classes if your not sure your A1 or A2. Last but not least I finally feel like I understand and have the courage to speak French which is the ultimate goal, thank you so much !!!!
